What can you do?
As the friend or family member of a nursing home resident, you can use your own powers of observation to decrease the chances that they will be the victim of elder abuse.
Look for the warning signs of elder abuse.
Oftentimes the best way to prevent abuse is by simply remaining alert. It is important to recognize that elder abuse is something which can happen to anyone. If you are unhappy with the care you or someone you know in a nursing home is receiving, don’t wait until things get worse before you speak up.
Check whether the nursing home facility has received any citations from the California Department of Public Health.
The California Department of Public Health, http://www.dhs.ca.gov/ maintains a record of every Nursing Home Class AA Citation. Class AA Citations are given when a facility is cited for committing a violation which directly leads to the death of a resident. Examine The Department’s most recent inspection results for a particular nursing home. Each nursing home is required to post a copy of the results in a place where they can be easily viewed.
Know the caretakers who are assisting your family member.
By taking an active role in your family members care you will demonstrate to the staff that you care about how they are treated and will be checking in to ensure that your family member is receiving sufficient care. It is a good idea to show up often at unannounced times. This ensures that you witness the care and standards which are implemented on a daily basis, as opposed to visitor events when there is time to prepare.
Staff should be required to submit to a thorough background check.
The Nursing Home Facility should screen all employees for criminal history AND past employment history. In addition, the facility should keep records of every complaint filed against an employee for abuse or neglect.
